Small red veins visible just beneath the skin's surface are called spider veins. They appear primarily on the legs. These reddish, branching lines in the upper layer of skin are generally harmless. They are neither a disease nor do they cause discomfort, but they do detract from the skin's appearance. For this reason, they are often perceived as bothersome. They can generally appear anywhere on the body, but most commonly first on the inner thighs, as well as on the upper thighs and the sides of the feet. Spider veins can be a precursor to varicose veins. In fact, they are a type of mini-varicose vein. Spider veins are found in approximately 60% of all women and men between the ages of 20 and 29.
